Health Indicator Report of Maternal Insurance Status (Birth Records)

Lack of health insurance is strongly associated with lack of access to health care services, particularly preventive and primary care.

Notes

Data for White, Black, and Asian do not include Hispanics. Hispanic includes all individuals who list their ethnicity as Hispanic regardless of race. Each year, 25-30% of birth records have no insurance information given, so the proportion insured is likely higher than shown.

Data Source

Birth Certificate Database, Office of Vital Statistics and Registry, New Jersey Department of Health

Data Interpretation Issues

Each year, 25-30% of birth records have no insurance information given, so proportions in this report do not add to 100%. Note that these figures are from birth records. Data from Medicaid claims and from surveys, such as PRAMS, may vary.
